A Drink with Something in It
There is something about a Martini,
A tingle remarkably pleasant;
A yellow, a mellow Martini;
I wish I had one at present.
There is something about a Martini,
Ere the dining and dancing begin,
And to tell you the truth,
It is not the vermouth--
I think that perhaps it's the gin.

It's unclear why the Martini is called what it is - it has been attributed to a New York bartender named Martini, the dry vermouth Martini & Rossi, and to a very similar drink from Martinez, California called the Martinez. No matter what the origin, the Martini is the icon of the cocktail bar and is widely seen as the most stylish drink. There is also a great deal of uncertainty as to what a Martini is. Most afficionados agree, though, that the only reason an Apple Martini should be considered a Martini is for the same reason that Apple Jacks should be considered to be apples.Folks who like Martinis tend to like them passionately - the perfect martini is treated like an elusive holy grail, unreachable yet arduously sought after. As a result, the props are simply amazing - a Martini, served with panache, makes an indelible impression. Martini picks, vermouth misters, and immaculate stemware have all been created in the hopes of helping folks to build what is an almost mythological drink.
