Rum is one of the oldest liquors in the world, but drink recipes have only recently begun to call for mixing rum with other alcohols. While it is fairly important to know the different and distinct types of rum for mixing drinks, in most cases a cheap light rum will serve as well as a more expensive rum when mixed with strong or overpowering additives. Still, it is best to be familiar with the difference in taste between a light and a dark rum, and never to substitute either for a sweet rum. Since a rum flip can be made with any variety of rum, it is a pleasant platform from which to educate yourself as to the differences in taste between each variety.
