Sangria

1 1/2 liters Red Wine Cabernet Sauvignon
     1 cup Sugar
     4 ounces Brandy
     1 whole Lemon sliced
     1 whole Orange sliced
1 whole Apple cut into thin sections
     1 liter Soda Water
Combine fruit and wine in a large container. Stir. Refrigerate and let sit for about a day. Remove from refrigerator, stir and add sugar and/or brandy to taste. Then, slowly add soda water until it seems to have a thinner, wine-like consistency. If desired, you may instead add Lemon-Lime soda. Serve in red wine glasses.

It's not just a recipe: It's a culture war.

Sangria, a super summertime wine "punch" with its traditional heritage well rooted in Spain. Typically, Sangria is made with red wine, fresh, seasonal fruit and a bit of bubbly water or citrus flavored soda. It is easy to make, easy to drink and a huge hit at summer get togethers - even for those who are not "into wine." While Spain is heralded as the creator of Sangria, countries all over the globe have adapted the recipe to make a fruit-filled wine beverage that is refreshing and easy to drink with a wide variety of foods.

If you're looking for something simple and sweeter, click in the box in the upper right and do a quick search for "Sangria La" or "Instant Sangria." Most Americans mix this drink without the brandy, more tropical fruits, and club soda (or -Up) and then leave it in the fridge for a couple of days to stew. We recommend you try a few different recipes - as many as you have punch bowls available - and then send us an email with your preference.

But don't take our word for it...

Excellent

This drink is excellent! It's a great summer drink, as it's fairly light, and has a slight fruity flavor. I serve the fruit with the sangria and it makes a great snack. I'm a school bus driver, so having something to eat and keep me alert is a must. Highly recommended.

Sangria made SIMPLE
By Lush-ious in Houston

here is a more simple, more tasty recipe that i have found after much experimentation! bottle of fruity red wine (such as merlot), 2 cups of apple juice, juice of 1 orange, juice of 1 lemon, juice of 1 lime. garnish with apple/orange slices and grapes. this spells relaxation!

Maine Sangria
By Everett

This recipe calls for 3 liters red wine, merlot or cabirnet, 1 lter of vodka, brandy, or gin. 2 cups each of pineapple, cherries, apples, blueberries, and/or other fruit; 1-2 cups of sugar. Soak the fruit in the liquor for 36 hours, mashing the fruit with a potato masher every six hours. Add wine, let sit in frig for another 24 hours. Add sugar to taste, stir. Some of my quests like soda water, but I serve it on the side.

THIS IS NOT SANGRIA...

Sorry but this recipe is somewhat off where are the tropical fruits..Sangria is a seasonal drink.Never heard of brandy in sangria.Try adding fruit schnapps in the red wine with fruit juice and a mixture of fruits it is supposed to be a refreshing drink.

Have any of you ever had sangria in Spain??? Its fine, Spanish red wine and fruit that has sat in the wine for a while. Where the hell did you get all this fruit juice, bitters, and brandy stuff??? You're all missing out if you're adding all that extra smut.

Yanks know least
By drunk in madrid

The original recipie is the best. The other suggestions are a far cry from the real, the original Spanish Sangria. Hasn't anyone ever been to Spain? Nothing beats sipping sangria while munching on tapas. I highly recommend enjoying the sangria with a sharp manchego cheese. The flavors pair nicely.

As a spanish bartender, I have to say that there are lot's of different ways of making a Sangria, I'd keep the Brandy off and maybe add some champagne, Martini (white & red), the fruit is essential, sliced lemon, orange, apple, no schnapps, and as for the soda water, it has to be sweet soda water, you can use lemon soda too.

Drink & Be Merry

Enough already! I looked on this site to find a good reciept for Sangria ~ What I found were alot of unhappy people. Just drink & be merry! I thought sharing different ways to make something was suppose to be fun. I want a punch bowl full of something fun and different, something nice & refreshing but not to strong( I don't need any overnight guest). I'm going to try pinnapple chunks, peaches, orange & lemon slices soaked overnight in red wine. I'm going to mix a can of frozen o.j w/ a can of frozen lime -aid 1/2 a cup of pinnapple juice, 1/2 a cup of peach necture and 1 cup of tonic water. I'll mix all of that together and put it into ice cube trays. The next day I'll add the "juice cubes" into the fruit and red wine, and fill the rest of the bowl w/ champagne. by the time my guest arrive it should be mixing very well and still have some fizz to it. I hope it turns out well ~ if not I don't think any of my family will curse me out and tell me I didn't make it right. My you all have a wonderful holiday and my that bus driver be charged w/ reckless driving and child indangerment!

Anything But Clothes

I'm a huge fan of Sangria. I found that it can be a great substitute for jungle juice or punch at a college party. try adding a little orange flavored liquer, vodka, sweet fruit punch, and orange soda instead of lemon or lime. also it's best if you use powdered sugar instead of granulated. My Swim team threw an 'Anything But Clotrhes' themed party at our off campus house. we had a tubof sangria behind the bar and it was a huge hit. needless to day I don't remember much of the night but it was a good time.

Champagne Sangria

I'm a bartender at a spanish restaurant and we serve wine and champagne sangria...both are a pretty big hit but the champagne sangria is the most popular...we mix pureed(sp?) strawberries, vodka, rum, brandy and triple sec with some juices like cranberry, oj, pineapple, lemonade (pretty much whatever kind of juices you feel like) then add the champagne and top with fresh fruit...very tasty and a big seller.

YOUR METHODS ARE BULLSHIT
By Zach

Sangria is a Spanish drink. SPANISH!!! NOT MEXICAM, AMERICAN, OR ANYTHING BUT SPANISH!!! Having recently spent a month in Spain, Sangria is made by mixing Spanish red wine, which should be half of your Sangria. Brandy should make up about a third of the remaining space. Fill the rest with 7UP or Sprite. Note that before doing anything, have cut up oranges, lemons, peaches/nectarines, and melon at the bottom of your pitcher.

A wonderful Spanish drink

Sangria is an excellent traditional Spanish drink with a red wine base. The other ingredients can be quite varied depending on what part of the country you happen to be in and the mood of the bartender you order from. The problem I have with this particular recipe is the lack of spices. The sangria I enjoyed most when I visited Spain had cinniman, cloves, and other spices added. It was delicious and I would highly recommend trying it! The Spanish are a wonderfully relaxed people, there is no set recipe, so make it up as you go along and enjoy!

Bond girl

Soooooo silly to argue over a Sangria recipe when even in Spain everyone pretty much makes it according to taste. Many of my Spanish relatives tell of the history of Sangria coming from simple poor people who added whatever was available to stretch the drink. Whatever fruits or spices were in the house. Stop arguing and add what you want. You have to drink it and no two people would ever agree anyway. Relax...

I'm really into the white version of Sangria, finished off with some nice smooth Cava. The previous entries were close to the mark, but,the fresh fuit is a must, whatever colour wine is used for the base.Soda water, just to make up the volume, or 7 up/lemonade/sprite for a bit more fizz. Very nice on a hot sunny day. From a wizen(WELSH)barsteward.

Another Way
By Jewels

i'm a bartender at a resturant, and this is how we make sangia, it's not too bad...for an individual glass of sangria...3 oz fruity red wine, my restaurant uses Yellow Tail Shiraz, but whatever floats your boat - i would choose merlot...orange juice, cranberry juice, club soda, triple sec and bacardi big apple...mash up some oranges and limes in there, yummy.

Crazy PPL

I have sipped sangria before, and it's pretty good compared to the other drinks I've had. You people are all crazy for arguing over a drink! Did u have a hangover when u did it?! Cuz its dumb! I came here to look up the history of Sangria, instead I found a bunch of arguing dumb-butts who can't agree on what should be in a drink! Order it from the restaraunt for cryin' out loud! They know how to make it! Isn't theirs good enough? But noooo, we have to make our own and try to out-do every1 else!!!

Best I ever had
By Amber Baker

I don't know what the recipe is, but the best Sangria I have ever had was the red Sangria from the Olive Garden. That was the first time I had ever tried it. YUM! Then I tried making it at home from some random recipe off the internet and it turned out terrible. I think starting with a good wine is most important. It would take a lot of ingredients to turn rot-gut box wine into something pleasantly flavored. For those who like to turn their nose up - TO EACH HIS OWN. Let it be, grow up and stop hating. People will like you more. Anyways, if you work for the Olive Garden and can shed some light on their recipe, that would be so much appreciated.

Olive Garden Sangria

Found this on CopyKat Recipes - Mix 1 1/2 liters red table wine (I used Lambrusco), 1 cup grenadine, 2 cups cranberry juice cocktail, 1 1/4 cups sweet vermouth, sugar water (1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water), strawberries cut into thirds, oranges sliced thin then quartered. Let sit in refrigerator atleast 4-5 hours, if not overnight. Pour sangria into serving glass, fruit and all, then add crushed ice. Makes 8 servings - 1 gallon. Can anybody verify this? Tastes good...
